Microsuction is virtually painless. You may hear a loud whooshing sound — this is normal. Most patients are surprised by how comfortable the procedure is. Water irrigation is also gentle; some patients find the warm water slightly unusual but not uncomfortable.
For microsuction it’s not essential, though using olive oil drops for 3–5 days before your appointment can make the procedure quicker. For water irrigation, we recommend softening the wax with olive oil drops for at least 3–5 days prior to treatment.
A typical appointment lasts 20–30 minutes. This includes an initial assessment of both ears with a video otoscope, the treatment itself, and aftercare advice. Home visits may take slightly longer.
Yes. We treat children from age 4 upwards. Our specialists are experienced in making the process comfortable and reassuring for younger patients. A parent or guardian must be present throughout the appointment.
Yes — microsuction is the recommended method for patients with a history of ear surgery, grommets, or perforated eardrums. Water irrigation is not suitable in these cases. Please mention any history of ear surgery when booking.
Yes. We offer home visits across Edinburgh and the surrounding Lothians area. Home visits are ideal for elderly patients, those with mobility difficulties, or anyone who would prefer the convenience of treatment at home. Please call us to arrange.
